Money scams - be vigilant!

Unfortunately, criminals are using the lockdown to target vulnerable people and con them out of money. The police are reporting an increase in scams and online fraud at this time, and urge everyone to be vigilant.

We all need to be aware of how we can protect ourselves and stay safe, not just from the threat of coronavirus, but from being ripped off by cheats and con artists.

At a time when more elderly and vulnerable people are having to live in isolation it is crucial we are all aware of the potential threat of falling victim to a scam. Most importantly no one should ever share personal information, bank details or PIN numbers with others. If you know of a vulnerable friend or family member living on their own, please make them aware of the dangers of scams and reassure them they can always call you for advice or support.

Criminals target their victims in various ways and scams can come in the form of a knock on the door, email, text message or phone call. So if a stranger contacts you asking you for money or to reveal your personal details, be sure to follow the three steps below:

Stop: Take a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information. Call a friend, family or neighbour for advice if you’re worried.

Challenge: Ask yourself: could it be fake? It’s okay to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you. Your bank or the police will NEVER ask you to transfer money nor ask for your PIN or full banking password.

Protect: Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve fallen for a scam and report it to Action Fraud or call 0300 123 2040.
