Why work for us?

Join us and make a difference to our communities

As the largest city in central Southern England and a regional centre for employment, retail, education and leisure, Southampton is a really exciting place to be. The third highest ranking city in the UK for good growth and the world’s leading business incubator for UK tech entrepreneurs, it is a city of great opportunity that has a tremendous track record for delivering on its ambition to compete on the world stage.

Great location

Well located with one of the country’s busiest and most successful ports, an airport less than 10 miles away from the city centre and well-connected to other cities by rail and motorway, we are well positioned to do this. The city centre is easy to travel around by foot, bike and public transport and offers a range of retail outlets, restaurants, bars, cinemas and theatres, as well as a number of parks and open spaces to enjoy within the city. All of this and the New Forest National Park on its doorstep!

Committed to equality

Southampton City Council, which comprises all colleagues, Councillors and our partners, commits to the following six principles:

  • Supporting all members of the council workforce (colleagues, partners, Councillors) to be able to challenge discriminatory behaviour or language, including micro-aggressions
  • Understanding, identifying and promoting the rich, diverse cultural offer of the council and the city
  • Reminding ourselves that we each have a joint and personal responsibility in upholding the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equity. Everyone is accountable
  • Ensuring that we strive for real representation across the organisation, challenging any practices or procedures that might be deemed bias or unfair so that each and every member of the council feels at home within their respective workspace
  • Creating the best environment for complex and challenging conversations regarding both protected and non-protected characteristics as defined under the Equalities Act 2010
  • Allowing everyone the right to make mistakes and learn from one another to achieve true mutual respect and understanding, reminding one another that we all have lessons to learn, as well as a duty to call one another into the best behaviours

We provide regular monthly training to all staff on Diversity and Inclusion, after which participants can take the opportunity to personally agree to uphold these six principles by signing our Diversity and Inclusion Pledge.

Disability Confident Employer logoWe are proud to be a Disability Confident Employer and support fair recruitment practices. As part of this commitment we offer an interview to all disabled people who apply for a job at the council and meet the minimum criteria.

We also offer interviews to all job applicants from the armed forces community who meet the minimum requirements for the vacancy. This is one of the ways we honour the Armed Forces Covenant, having signed both the Community Covenant and the Corporate Covenant.

City of Culture bid

We are excited to be in the final four shortlisted cities for the bid to be UK City of Culture in 2025 and having made a commitment to become a clean green city through the launch of the Green City Charter, this is a city of opportunity that is really going places.

A recent report by Price Waterhouse Cooper (PwC) places us in the top three cities in England in terms of growth. Since 2012 over £3billion has been invested in the city, resulting in amazing transformation and cementing our position as the economic powerhouse of the south coast and becoming one of the fastest growing cities in the south of England. Through continued focused investment, new training and job opportunities have been created for the city’s residents to ensure we retain and attract talent.

At Southampton City Council, we believe that people are our greatest asset. We are always looking to attract the best people who want to put their experience to good use by making a real difference to lives of people living and working in the city and visiting it.
