Contractor appointed for next phase of new homes at Townhill Park

The transformation of Townhill Park is continuing well with plans for more affordable homes taking a step forward.

Local contractor Drew Smith Ltd has been appointed to progress design work and secure planning consent for around 200 new flats off Meggeson Avenue and Townhill Way.

There will be engagement opportunities with local people as the design develops and before the planning application is submitted.

Townhill Park resident and Chair of local community group SO18 Big Local, Kim Ayling, says she is excited to see the changes taking place locally: “As a local resident it is great to see the estate regeneration continue to move forward. In my role as Chair of SO18 Big Local, we as a group are thrilled to be working so closely with the council on the regeneration of our neighbourhood and it is especially fantastic to see the community at the heart of this landmark project.”

As well as much-needed affordable and energy-efficient homes, the regeneration of Townhill Park also includes new community facilities. Last year improvements took place to slow down traffic in Meggeson Avenue, the main route through the neighbourhood. Now, construction is underway to create a new community green space which will include an events space, outdoor gym and children’s play area. Local people have been involved in developing the plans by taking part in questionnaires and social media polls which will inform the types of play and exercise equipment installed.

There are plans for further new homes here and we are currently in the process of reviewing tenders from contractors to design residential schemes off Rowlands Walk and Copse Road at Townhill Park.

The new housing in Townhill Park forms part of our pledge to deliver 1000 council homes in the city by 2025. Other sites that are under construction include Starboard Way, a new development in Lordshill where 103 new council homes are being constructed on the site of the former Oaklands Community School off Fairisle Road. And in Maybush work is almost completed at Potters Court, our latest housing with care scheme which will provide 83 purpose-built flats and community facilities. Adjacent to Potters Court, a further 15 apartments will be available for over 50s at Kiln Court.
