Don’t miss out on benefits you’re entitled to

With the cost of living going up all the time, every penny counts, yet many local residents, particularly older people, are missing out on valuable benefit payments they are entitled to.

Lots of people simply don’t realise they’re eligible for financial assistance or are put off from applying because they’re either worried about the prospect of filling in complicated forms or the stigma associated with claiming benefits.

But, if you are due some extra money, it really is worth finding out more. Read our guide below to find out more about benefits you may be able to claim if you have reached state pension age.

Pension Credit

Pension Credit is an income-related benefit which gives extra money in retirement. It provides people of pension age (which is currently age 66 for both men and women) with a minimum level of income for day to day living.

There are two parts to Pension Credit; you may be eligible for one or both parts depending on your income.

  1. Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to a minimum amount:
    • £177.10 if you’re single
    • £270.30 if you have a partner
  2. Savings Credit is a small top-up for people who have a modest amount of income or savings. It’s only available if you reached state pension age before 6 April 2016

If your income is higher, you may still be eligible if you qualify for the severe disability or carers addition if you are receiving disability benefits or provide care to someone who is severely disabled.

There is no savings limit for Pension Credit but if you have savings over £10,000 this will reduce the amount you get.

If you are eligible for the Guarantee Credit of Pension Credit you will automatically qualify for:

  • Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction, but you will need to make a separate claim
  • Free TV Licence if you are age 75 or over
  • Warm Homes Discount (worth £140 a year)
  • Cold weather payments (potentially worth £25 a week in winter)
  • Free dental treatment
  • Voucher for glasses/contact lenses

Help with your Council Tax

If you are not eligible for Pension Credit you may still be entitled to help with your Council Tax if you are on a low income and have less than £16,000 in savings, this is called Council Tax Reduction. You can claim Council Tax Reduction regardless of whether you own your home or rent.
