Millbrook resident celebrates 40 years of volunteering

Lots of tenants across the city regularly give up their time to benefit their local community. Millbrook Towers resident Mo Simmons is one shining example of a community champion.

Mo has been volunteering for 40 years and over that time has helped to bring about major improvements for the Millbrook neighbourhood and improve life for many local people.

Now, after four decades of tirelessly serving her local community, and through her work at The Samaritans, Mo has decided to step back from her volunteering duties for a well-deserved rest.

Mo has played an active role in the local area since she moved into Millbrook Towers back in 1982. As a key member of the local Tenants Association she established many community activities including social groups for parents and toddlers, and the over 50s. The Tenants Association was so successful, Mo and her colleagues even campaigned for and subsequently received a dedicated building for their group and the community to use.

Mo later became Vice Chair of the Southampton Tenant and Residents Federation to represent tenants city-wide and help drive forward improvements to the housing service.

Other good causes that Mo has been involved with include the Millbrook and Maybush Regeneration Board, the Millbrook Community Association, and Friends of Mansel Park. She spoke up on behalf of local families who wanted better recreation facilities and then helped to bid for funds to develop new play areas in the park.

In more recent years Mo has stepped forward to become a block rep, providing a valuable link between the council and her neighbours. She has also helped to monitor the local green spaces to ensure the neighbourhood is well maintained.

Mo says she would encourage anyone who wants to have a say in the housing service and the area where they live, to consider volunteering.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time volunteering. I have met some lovely people over the years and am so proud that my input has made a difference. I would recommend volunteering to anyone who wants to bring about changes however big or small.”
