Do you want to move home?

If you want to move home but don’t want to sit on the waiting list for years did you know you can apply to swap your home with another tenant?

This is called a mutual exchange and we are about to launch a new digital service to make applying even quicker and easier.

If you want to apply for a mutual exchange to swap properties you’ll need to register for free on the Homeswapper website.  Currently you need to print out the form and then hand it in to your Local Housing Office. But later this month you will be able to apply for a mutual exchange online and then use the website to track updates on how your application is proceeding. For more information about the new digital mutual exchange service that launches this October, just contact your Local Housing Office.

Through a mutual exchange you can apply to swap your home with another council or housing association tenant anywhere in the country. Whether you want to move streets in Southampton or relocate to Scotland, a mutual exchange could mean you’re settling into a new property sooner than you expect.

Remember, you must ask our permission before you apply for a mutual exchange and you can only apply for a property which meets your needs (e.g. doesn’t have more bedrooms than your household requires). Also, you will not be able to move if you have any rent arrears.

When it comes to moving day make sure that your home meets our Moving Out Standard before you hand back your keys. If you don’t leave the property clean, tidy, in good repair and decorative order you could face paying costs.  You will be charged for any work to repair damage not due to normal wear and tear, or to clear any personal items left behind.
