Health and safety guidance

With the aim of protecting the health, safety and welfare of our employees, pupils and visitors, Southampton City Council requires each school to develop, implement and maintain an effective health and safety management system. A manual has been designed specifically to help head teachers and their management teams achieve this aim by providing clear and straightforward information tailored to reflect the school setting.

Good health and safety management supports the delivery of high educational standards and should be integrated into everything we do. However, although it is necessary to demonstrate legal compliance by being able to provide evidence, health and safety should not become an administrative burden. On that premise, the manual's general approach is a pragmatic one. With safety advice notes to aid good management practice, and guidance in the form of model health and safety procedures and example risk assessments that can be customised to suit your school, this evolving information source will help you secure compliance and meet our joint key objective – safe and healthy schools in the city.
