Each household in Southampton will have two bins:
- A green lid for general waste
- A blue lid for recycling
Each household will also have a box for glass recycling.
If your house has insufficient storage space for a bin then you will be issued rolls of black and clear sacks that are delivered twice a year and must only be presented for collection on the scheduled collection day.
Blocks of flats usually have larger communal or shared bins and an igloo or wheeled bin for glass recycling.
If you think you are missing a bin see what do I do if my bin has been lost or stolen?
Changing your bin
Before you contact us to request a change in bin size, please check the size of your current bin. The standard size of a bin issued to Southampton households is 240L.
General waste (green lid) SHOW
If you request a larger or additional general waste bin, strict criteria apply which you will have to meet in order to be eligible. This includes:
- Having two or more household members in nappies
- Medical conditions that result in additional waste being created
- Seven or more in the property
Residents must show a solid effort to recycle with minimal to no recycling going into their household waste bin and correct use of their glass box.
To evaluate your needs we will need to carry out an inspection of your bin(s) and the contents to assess how you are currently managing your waste and recycling. We will always knock your door and talk to you about your request. We will also require proof of occupancy such as a tenancy agreement or council tax bill to confirm numbers of adults in the household, and may also require proof of number of children in the home. Any agreed increase in capacity will be reviewed after 12 months. Failure to provide relevant evidence may result in your request being refused.
If you are not at home at the time an officer visits we will let you know we have called by leaving a calling card.
